Athletics Day- Hannah

Athletics Day

On Tuesday it was Athletics day at Mount Smart. The senior side kids were the ones that joined in. everyone was wearing mufti clothes but they had to be in your house colours.

The year 4 girls’ first exciting event was the 400 m race around the whole entire track. Some people even pushed and shoved because they were so extremely desperate to win. After our race was finished it was the boys’ turn. We waited till they had started and then we ran across the track to get some more food and also some drink.

Secondly we had a race called the 60 m sprint. Mr Ratcliffe called everyone into their heats and then Mr Topp clapped this loud thing that you clap together and it does the job to say “GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” We sprinted as fast as we could like spotty leaping leopards running to catch prey.

Finally we swapped over. The years 5 and 6 went off the field and onto the track and the years 3 and 4 went off the track to the field. I was so confused where to go so I just followed all the other year 4 girls and realised that we were doing Standing Long jump first. I didn’t get too far but I was pretty happy about it.

I found that my most favourite on the field was javelin. I liked every single one on the track though. When we hopped back onto the bus to go back to school, I was thinking of how I found Athletics day. I said to myself…………… IT WAS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Moment in time

This term we are looking at describing a 'moment in time'. We are finding this very tricky so we found this great website that explains what we need to include.

Shrek- Charlotte

Shrek

I think Shrek is a goodie because he is a hero and saved princess Fiona in the first movie. He cares for her and shares his things with her. He has been misguided because he looks like a scary ogre but inside he is actually really kind-hearted and nice. He is hilarious and makes friends to anyone who is nice to him and takes a lot of care to his friend donkey. Donkey wakes him up with a He-Haw every morning and is very good at feeding him every day.

How a magnifying glass works- Declan

How a magnifying glass works

The magnifying glass is a type of material that helps you look at things that are on the ground close up. When you look at the ground the things that are on the ground, you can see close up, this is the same as when you put a glass down and put some objects in and cover it with glad wrap and push it down to make it hollow then pour some water on the glad wrap then look through the water they look bigger this is because when you look through.

A weekend at Tiritirimatangi- Charlotte F

A weekend at Tirituri Matangi

Walt: use conjunctions to conduct compound sentences
I went to Turituri Matangi on a great big fairy
                                        AND
I stood next to the only lighthouse you can see from great barrier island.
                                       BUT
The lighthouse keeper was told he could not work at the lighthouse anymore
                                       YET
All the other lighthouses in Auckland were automatic
                                     AND
They would not pay him anymore.
                                    BUT
It was so tired to keep going up the hill
                                  SO

I fell asleep along the path. CLEVER!

Dinner at Cate's- Carlotta

Dinner at Cate’s house!

First …
Cate and I started making a dress for the kid’s fashion show.
We are making a peacock dress out of rubbish and leaves.

Secondly …
Nina arrived and we had dinner, for dinner we had really good hot dogs.
We also played this game when one person pushes out with their
hands and the  other person pulls out with their hands for 20 seconds
and when you let go  it feels like your arms are flying .

After …
We watched a movie called Fred .
It’s about a boy who likes his neighbour but she
moved and he thinks she got kidnapped.
We also watched a bit of Lab Rats .

Finally …
We went home very sleepy and ready to
 go to bed.

Explanation- Kate

Magnifying glass
A magnifying glass helps you see things close up. A magnifying glass makes things look close up because there is a curve in it. It is called a concave. And the curve bends the light and makes the objects look bigger.

If you don’t have a magnifying glass you can do an experiment this is how you do it. You get a glass jar and put some small objects in the jar. Then you put glad wrap on the to you put a rubber band around so the glad wrap stays on. Then you put a little water on top of the glad wrap and look through it. Then you are done.

Writing goals

This week we looked at the a piece of writing that showed us the Year 4 standard. We had to identify the parts of the writing that showed us each of the following things:
Vocabulary
Punctuation
Personal voice
Ideas
Spelling
Language features
Sentence structure

We also talked about planning and editing our writing. Then we chose one of these areas to focus on as our writing goal. Check out these examples we made using the Explain Everything app on the iPads.

These are the areas we will be focusing on for writing over the term. They are also displayed on the wall in our classroom.

WALT: Begin our writing with a super starter

Today we practiced beginning our story with a time and then give the reader clues about where we might be and what we are doing.

It was 10:40 AM. Oops I dropped my present but, I am soooooo excited.’’ OK I will put these socks on and then we can jump????? ‘’I asked happily. No, first the instructor will tell us the safety rules and THEN we can jump.’’ Rosie said calmly. So the instructor told us the safety rules and then we walked through the corridor and every one with green bands stormed up the stairs and started jumping. ‘’WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ‘’ I yelled as I slipped off the rope into the foam pit. ‘’That was fun!!!
By Hannah

Declan thought the "weeeeeeeee" part was really funny
Sora noticed that she used lots of punctuation.
Miss Hopkins thought she gave the reader really great clues about what she was doing.
